CBU in the Media

An article in the February 5 edition of the Memphis Daily News entitled “‘The Team That Beat Memphis’ Has a Target on Its Back” spotlights Coach Mike Nienaber and the Buccaneer basketball team. “We’re the team that beat Memphis,” Nienaber is quoted. “It gives teams incentive every time we play. But we’re good enough to beat anybody in our league on a given night. Get to Birmingham, then all bets are off.”

An article in the February 5 edition of The Memphis Flyer entitled “Tennessee Joins Multi-State Lawsuit Against President Obama” deals with a multi-state lawsuit against President Obama, alleging his recent executive actions on immigration are unconstitutional. The article includes several quotes from Mauricio Calvo (Business Administration ’97), executive director of Latino Memphis. ”It’s a waste of resources,” Calvo is quoted. “With all of the things that we have to do as a state, we’re allocating tax money to fight the federal government on something that’s a dead end.”

An article in the February 3 edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer (philly.com) entitled “La Salle goes outside Catholic order for new chief” reports that former CBU Vice President for Academics Dr. Anthony Aretz is one of two finalists to become the first lay president of La Salle University (succeeding retired president Brother Michael McGinniss, also former president of CBU). Aretz is currently president of Mount St. Joseph University, a Catholic school in Cincinnati. The other finalist is Colleen M. Hanycz, head of Brescia University College, a Catholic school in London, Ontario, Canada. “La Salle University, for the first time in its 151-year history, will be led by a lay president rather than a Christian brother – and its new leader might be a woman,” the article states.

An article in the January 27 edition of Memphis Business Journal entitled “Wine tasting room coming to South Main” reports that CBU alum Chris Albonetti (Management ’95) is an investor in the Crown Tasting Room, a wine-tasting venue that is a partnership between Art Village Gallery and Crown Winery (of Humboldt, TN). The Crown Tasting Room will have a grand opening on February 21 from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Gallery located at 410 S. Main St. The celebration will mark its official opening to the public.
