Renovated Maurelian Lounge Reopens

The Maurelian Hall Lounge is now open after a new renovation.
With walls painted in school colors, matching carpet and floors, the lounge is a modern hang-out and study haven for students. Plush leather couches, a bar-styled area, a plug-in area for laptops, tablets and cell phones are just a few of the upgrades to the lounge. There is also a moveable study carrel area that is perfectly customizable for individual or group study sessions. There is also a mounted 60-inch television in the lounge that will be great for group TV watching, gaming systems, and more!

To celebrate the opening of the renovation, Student Life is hosting a college football playoff watch party in the lounge on Monday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m. There will be FREE food and a great opportunity to check out the new space and mingle.


MLK Remembrances at CBU

MARTIN LUTHER KING ORATORICAL CONTEST: The annual Martin Luther King Oratorical Contest will be held on Wednesday, January 14 in Spain Auditorium at 6:30 p.m., featuring 7th and 8th graders from De La Salle Elementary school. Students will give a three-minute speech on a theme of their choice. All participants will receive an award, with special recognition going to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Students will be judged on content, delivery, and how well the speech reflects the theme.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMEMORATION SERVICE: The MLK Commemoration Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, January 15 in Spain Auditorium at 1:00 p.m. The award-winning speech from the previous evening’s Oratorical Contest will be presented, as will special musical selections from CBU’s Divine Voices Gospel Choir and student Timothy Birchett. The speaker for the service will be Dr. Christophe Ringer, Visiting Professor of Religion & Philosophy at CBU and pastor of Howard Congregational (UCC) in Nashville. Dr. Ringer will address the theme of “Building a Loving and Non Violent Community.” The program is sponsored by Student Life, Campus Ministry, and the Black Student Association.

Lady Buc guard Courtney Banks (Natural Science ’18) was named GSC Freshman of the Week for the week of December 16. She averaged 11.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game for the week, scoring 14 points with five assists and five boards against Delta State, and nine points with four assists and three rebounds against Mississippi College.

Buccaneer guard Jeff Larkin (Business Administration ’18) was named GSC Freshman of the Week for the weeks of December 16, December 23, and January 6. (Added to his award for December 9, that makes four consecutive weeks!) For the first week, Larkin averaged 11.5 points and 4.5 assists, scoring 10 points with six assists and four rebounds against Delta State, and 11 points and three assists against Mississippi College. For the second week, he scored five points with two steals against West Georgia and followed with 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists against West Alabama. For the latest week, Larkin averaged 12.5 points per game, starting the week with 16 points, two assists and two steals against Harding and then racking up nine points (all from three-point range) and a pair of rebounds against Valdosta State.

Lady Buc guard Rachel Lee (Accounting ’18) was named GSC Freshman of the Week for the week of January 6. Lee scored 11 points with six rebounds and two assists against Harding, and followed with two points against Valdosta State.

An article entitled “Shock Absorption of Crumb Rubber and Coconut Fiber” was published in the International Journal of Advanced Packaging Technology, 2(1), 119-128, December 27, 2014. It was authored by Waleed Alnashwan (MSEM), Badar Aloumi (MSEM), Dr. Siripong Malasri (Dean of Engineering), Michael Kist (MSEM), Alex Othmani (Mechanical Engineering ’17), Ronald Fotso (Computer Science ’15), Matthew Johnson (Engineering Management ’15), Sebastian Polania (Mechanical Engineering ’17), and Yuliana Sanchez-Luna (Civil Engineering ’17).


Campus Ministry News

Three CBU students and four Christian Brothers attended SEEK 2015 in Nashville, January 1-5, sponsored by the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). CBU participants joined over 9,500 students from public and private universities across the country to answer the question Christ asked his disciples: What do you seek? (John 1:38) – What moves you in your life and in your faith? The program consisted of keynote speakers, small group impact sessions, fellowship, prayer experiences, and evening entertainment. The Commercial Appeal published an article entitled “A Year to Remember: For Memphis teen, where there’s a way, there’s a will” in its December 26 edition that profiled Joshua Salter, a junior at Middle College High School and a participant in the dual enrollment program at CBU. Theatre Auditions

greek-theater-masksThe Theatre Department will be holding open auditions on Wednesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m. in the University Theater. Come prepared to do cold readings from the script. Workshop Sessions for Academic Improvement

During January and February, four workshop sessions will be offered to help students toward a more successful college experience in areas of basic study skills techniques, helpful resources, self-assessment, self-motivation, etc.

The sessions will be held on Thursdays at 1:00-1:50 p.m. as follows:  January 22, January 29, February 5, and February 12 in the LLC Classroom (Room 104) and will be facilitated by Ms. Sadie Lisenby, Director of Counseling. The sessions are designed for students who have the desire and commitment to become a more successful student.  Interested students are urged to attend all four sessions.

ThSpring 2015 Final Exam schedule for Day Undergraduates will include exams on Saturday, May 9 — so plan accordingly. The Final Exam schedule will be posted over Spring Break.
• 1st 8-week grades are due on Monday, March 9
• 2nd 8-week grades are due on Monday, May 11
• 16-week grades are due on Tuesday, May 12
