CBU in the Media

The Commercial Appeal published a guest commentary by President John Smarrelli Jr. in its January 25 edition entitled “‘Tennessee Promise’ is not that promising.” In discussing Gov. Haslam’s “Tennessee Promise” program for free community college tuition and President Obama’s endorsement of a nationally expanded version, Dr. Smarrelli points out that “When ‘free’ community college is available, high school guidance counselors are inadvertently, but invariably, pressured to direct graduating seniors to these options and away from traditional four-year institutions.” and goes on to conclude that “[W]e take issue with any proposal, however well-meaning, that would privilege a community college degree and prematurely remove a four-year degree from consideration.”
