KUDOS (Week of 12/10/12)


The CBU Nursing Program celebrated the graduation of its first cohort RN to BSN class with a convocation on December 9 in the University Theater. Nineteen nurses were honored at the historic ceremony, marking the first recipients of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at CBU.

The CBU Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch placed second in the IEEE Global Website Contest. The winners of the 10 regional conference competitions advanced to the international competition that consisted of IEEE student branches worldwide and included graduate and undergraduate programs. Each website was evaluated by the Student Activities Committee, based on the criteria of content, presentation, navigability, originality, portability and load time. Last year, the CBU Student Branch of IEEE placed first in the 2011 International Website Contest.

Samantha Almanza (Liberal Studies ’09) was the recipient of the Lewis University Service Recognition Award for December 2012. Samantha was nominated by the President’s Student Advisory Council for her affability, friendliness and impressive service, as well as her enthusiastic assistance to the Lewis University community as Graduate Assistant for Enrollment Management. She will graduate from Lewis with her Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership/Higher Education-Student Services in May.

Jenny Cowell (Management/Marketing/Economics) completed her first full marathon on December 1, running the St. Jude Memphis Marathon in 3:47:43.

Lady Buc libero Kristina Headrick (General Studies ’16) was named Honorable Mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Headrick, previously named GSC Freshman of the Year, AVCA South Region Freshman of the Year, and AVCA First Team All-South Region, averaged 4.72 digs per set for the Lady Bucs, leading them to a 21-13 record and the NCAA Division II South Regional semifinals. She is the Lady Bucs’ second player to earn AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors, following Kelsey Miles (Natural Science ’13), who earned the accolade last year. Miles joins Headrick as the first players in school history to earn spots on the All-Tournament Team after leading the Lady Bucs to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Regional.

Dr. John Smarrelli Jr. (President) will participate in a Justice Forum Luncheon panel discussion hosted by Bridges on Thursday (December 13) at the Bridges Center. Dr. Smarrelli will address the topic of “The Future of Higher Education” along with fellow panelists Dr. Bill Trout (Rhodes College), Dr. Johnnie B. Watson (LeMoyne-Owen College), Dr. David Cox (University of Memphis), and Ms. Brenda Smith (Southwest Tennessee Community College).
