New to Canvas Guide

Canvas is CBU’s Learning Management System for all courses. Although using a strictly online delivery modality is NOT a requirement here at CBU, we want to let you know it is an option for you. In addition, if you would like to learn more about online course delivery or about how to use a hybrid delivery modality (i.e., part online, part traditional classroom delivery modality) the whole OLET team is here to support you.

You will have a Canvas Production Course Shell automatically waiting for you inside Canvas EACH semester so you might as well use it! Canvas takes the administrative burdens out of teaching and grading so you can focus on creating and sustaining strong teaching, cognitive, and social presences in your traditional, hybrid, or virtual classrooms.

Now you can take our Introduction to Canvas Course completely online! You’ll learn all about discussions, creating quizzes and developing modules. You can do it all from the comfort of your home or office and on your own schedule. Just click here to begin!

We are continually providing new trainings on Canvas. Click here to see our training menu.

If you need assistance with Canvas, our trainers are here to help.  Contact us to set up one-on-one training: or call (901) 321-4004.

All CBU instructors and students have access to a 24/7 Canvas Support Hotline: 901.318.3024. You can also use the Chat Help option inside Canvas. Just click Help and Live Chat. You can receive assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is all available to anyone with a CBU email address.

If you would like to get a jump on learning about Canvas, here are several resources to look at on your own.  You will need to have your CBU email set up first to get into Canvas (item 1), but items 2, 3, and 4 below do NOT require logging into Canvas to explore these resources.

  1. Inside Canvas, there are many helpful guides.  Login to Canvas. On the Global Navigation Menu, click Help. Search the Canvas Guides. You’ll find the most helpful to be the Instructor Guide, Practice Guides, or Video Guides.
  1. Click here to find out the basic computer requirements for Canvas.
  1. Click here to learn which browsers Canvas supports.
  1. Canvas has two mobile apps. One for students and one for faculty.  As an instructor, you may wish to download both.
