CBU CareerLinX Recruitment System Q&A

CareerLinx_shortI see “CareerLinX” mentioned in this newsletter all the time.  What IS that exactly?

CareerLinX is the recruitment system software used by CBU Career Services.  This system allows CBU students and alumni to view jobs, internships, and other opportunities posted by local and national employers, as well as on-campus intern and work-study positions!  Most jobs are posted by employers who we’ve worked with for years, and who are specifically looking for a CBU student or alumnus to fit the bill!

There are lots of other things you can do with CareerLinX, too (load resumes and cover letters, RSVP to workshops, etc.), but the main goal is to help you more easily interface with recruiters who are looking for someone just like you!

Do I already have an account?

If you were enrolled at the beginning of the year, then yes, you should already have an account under your CBU email address!  All current students automatically get an account as in-coming freshmen…and it lasts in perpetuity!   So if you missed the “System Welcome” message that was sent with your username and password, your account is still waiting for you!

If you’re an alumnus, or a new student who still needs an account, then you can sign up for an account at any time.  You can set your username and password to whatever you prefer.

How do I log in to CareerLinX?

Easy!  Just click here.  If you’ve not used your account before now, then your default username is your CBU email address.  Just keep in mind that your default password is NOT the same as your CBU email password.  CareerLinX is a stand-alone system (not part of your email, or Banner, or MyCBU), so the initial password is different from any others you may use.  If you already have an account, just use the “forgot password” link to reset it.  You can then change it to whatever you want!

What is the first thing I should do when I’m logged in?

As mentioned above, there are a lot of things you can do with CareerLinX.  But the first thing you’ll want to do is update your profile in the “profile” tab.  You can share as much or as little information as you want, but there are a few very important things to keep current…such as your major, your class year, and your anticipated graduation date.  These elements are the objective criteria that can effect your ability to view and/or apply for certain jobs, so be sure to update them at least once every semester…keeping that info current is VERY important.

Once you update your profile, we encourage you to explore all the other things you can do with CareerLinX.  If you have any questions or get stuck at any point, don’t hesitate to contact Curt Rogers in Career Services:  crogers@cbu.edu.

talkingA CEO explains how the answer to an unusual interview question helps determine who should get hired
From Business Insider

Most job candidates go into interviews expecting to discuss their previous jobs, academic work, and hobbies. But James Cline, CEO of the outdoor decks-maker Trex Company, prefers to reach even further into the past by asking, “what’s your oldest memory?” “I want to understand their background, their roots, where they came from, what it was like growing up,” he told Business Insider.

If an interviewee played softball, for example, Cline would want to know whether they were the kind of player that threw the ball as hard as possible to try and hurt the other person. And in business, like a sports field, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Read More…

resume_readingThis Is Why You Did (Or Didn’t) Get Hired: A Look Into The Minds Of Recruiters
From Forbes

Those of us scouring the job market for work spend a certain amount of time trying to decipher what hiring companies are looking for and what they’re thinking. Knowing can be the difference between a new job and a rejection email.

Last month Glassdoor.com, a job search and career information company, conducted a survey of more 750 director-level or above “hiring decision makers” in the U.S. and U.K. – 553 of them stateside – to learn more about what they are looking for and what challenges they face when searching for new personnel. The study – conducted with the help of Aptitude Research Partners, an HR-focused analytics and advisory firm – showed that companies are adapting their approach to separating the wheat from the chaff as they seek to fill positions.  Read More…

image22 Qualities That Make A Great Leader (Slideshow)
From Entrepreneur

1. Focus – “It’s been said that leadership is making important but unpopular decisions. That’s certainly a partial truth, but I think it underscores the importance of focus. To be a good leader, you cannot major in minor things, and you must be less distracted than your competition. To get the few critical things done, you must develop incredible selective ignorance. Otherwise, the trivial will drown you.”  Read More…
