CBU CareerLinX Recruitment System Q&A

CareerLinx_shortI see “CareerLinX” mentioned in this newsletter all the time.  What IS that exactly?

CareerLinX is the recruitment system software used by CBU Career Services.  This system allows CBU students and alumni to view jobs, internships, and other opportunities posted by local and national employers, as well as on-campus intern and work-study positions!  Most jobs are posted by employers who we’ve worked with for years, and who are specifically looking for a CBU student or alumnus to fit the bill!

There are lots of other things you can do with CareerLinX, too (load resumes and cover letters, RSVP to workshops, etc.), but the main goal is to help you more easily interface with recruiters who are looking for someone just like you!

Do I already have an account?

If you were enrolled at the beginning of the year, then yes, you should already have an account under your CBU email address!  All current students automatically get an account as in-coming freshmen…and it lasts in perpetuity!   So if you missed the “System Welcome” message that was sent with your username and password, your account is still waiting for you!

If you’re an alumnus, or a new student who still needs an account, then you can sign up for an account at any time.  You can set your username and password to whatever you prefer.

How do I log in to CareerLinX?

Easy!  Just click here.  If you’ve not used your account before now, then your default username is your CBU email address.  Just keep in mind that your default password is NOT the same as your CBU email password.  CareerLinX is a stand-alone system (not part of your email, or Banner, or MyCBU), so the initial password is different from any others you may use.  If you already have an account, just use the “forgot password” link to reset it.  You can then change it to whatever you want!

What is the first thing I should do when I’m logged in?

As mentioned above, there are a lot of things you can do with CareerLinX.  But the first thing you’ll want to do is update your profile in the “profile” tab.  You can share as much or as little information as you want, but there are a few very important things to keep current…such as your major, your class year, and your anticipated graduation date.  These elements are the objective criteria that can effect your ability to view and/or apply for certain jobs, so be sure to update them at least once every semester…keeping that info current is VERY important.

Once you update your profile, we encourage you to explore all the other things you can do with CareerLinX.  If you have any questions or get stuck at any point, don’t hesitate to contact Curt Rogers in Career Services:  crogers@cbu.edu.

icon_badinterviewFour Steps To Conquer Career Anxiety
From Forbes

In an age of endless possibilities and major FOMO, it’s no surprise that so many millennials experience career anxiety. You may be wondering if you’re in the right job, if you’re doing enough, or even if you’re good enough. (Impostor syndrome anyone?) Maybe your boss is seriously stressing you out, or you just wish you were doing something different entirely. Data shows that millennials experience anxiety more than older generations: 30% of millennials reported experiencing anxiety, compared to 25% of baby boomers and 26% of Generation X.

As a career coach to millennials, I’ve seen it all. Sometimes clients will come to me, so wound up, that they burst into tears at the beginning of our session. They’ve been dealing with anxiety, stress, and fear for far too long. Oftentimes, they don’t even know why they feel that way in the first place. There’s no need to let it get that far.

You already have the tools within you to start addressing your anxiety. Don’t let it overtake your life! Here are four steps to help you conquer your career anxiety right now, wherever it may stem from. Read More…

imageHow to Turn Your Career into One that Will Stand the Test of Time
From Inc.

Do you want a rich, textured, and meaningful work life? In a future obscured by uncertainty — there is a beam of light. And the path it illuminates is that of a modular career*. Proponents of serial careerism can be traced back decades (at least as far as) Charles Handy and Peter Drucker. Match your values, skills, experience, education, interests, relationships, aptitude, and attitude to something professional — and voila you have a new career. If only it were so simple.

Handy envisioned a future where we would sell bits of our time as highly specialized portfolio workers. Drucker predicted a future where many of us would have many careers. He saw the end of jobs for life and was himself a teacher, writer, and management consultant. His little secret: several careers provide for a total life where you can, “Live in more than one world.” Small wonder Drucker later bloomed into a leading authority in Japanese art.

Victoria Stoyanova, Simon Mhanna, and Marcus Collins — all epitomize today’s modular careerist. They possess the modern day version of job security while cultivating a fluid working life. Here they share secrets on how to make your career answer to your curiosity. Read More…
