Career Services is now accepting student applications for the Winter Break Externship Program.  An externship is a short-term, unpaid experience in which students shadow and observe a “day in the life” of a professional. They can be included on a resume and allow students to explore a career and develop networking contacts for potential internships or employment.

If you are interested in applying for one of the externships below, please indicate the site of greatest interest to you and submit a copy of your resume to clantrip@cbu.edu.  Sites are finalized on a “first come, first served” basis as applications come in, so submit your requests ASAP!

Alumni, if you are interested in HOSTING an extern at your organization, you can also email Cathy Lantrip in Career Services.  (clantrip@cbu.edu)

CBU CareerLinX Recruitment System Q&A

CareerLinx_shortI see “CareerLinX” mentioned in this newsletter all the time.  What IS that exactly?

CareerLinX is the recruitment system software used by CBU Career Services.  This system allows CBU students and alumni to view jobs, internships, and other opportunities posted by local and national employers, as well as on-campus intern and work-study positions!  Most jobs are posted by employers who we’ve worked with for years, and who are specifically looking for a CBU student or alumnus to fit the bill!

There are lots of other things you can do with CareerLinX, too (load resumes and cover letters, RSVP to workshops, etc.), but the main goal is to help you more easily interface with recruiters who are looking for someone just like you!

Do I already have an account?

If you were enrolled at the beginning of the year, then yes, you should already have an account under your CBU email address!  All current students automatically get an account as in-coming freshmen…and it lasts in perpetuity!   So if you missed the “System Welcome” message that was sent with your username and password, your account is still waiting for you!

If you’re an alumnus, or a new student who still needs an account, then you can sign up for an account at any time.  You can set your username and password to whatever you prefer.

How do I log in to CareerLinX?

Easy!  Just click here.  If you’ve not used your account before now, then your default username is your CBU email address.  Just keep in mind that your default password is NOT the same as your CBU email password.  CareerLinX is a stand-alone system (not part of your email, or Banner, or MyCBU), so the initial password is different from any others you may use.  If you already have an account, just use the “forgot password” link to reset it.  You can then change it to whatever you want!

What is the first thing I should do when I’m logged in?

As mentioned above, there are a lot of things you can do with CareerLinX.  But the first thing you’ll want to do is update your profile in the “profile” tab.  You can share as much or as little information as you want, but there are a few very important things to keep current…such as your major, your class year, and your anticipated graduation date.  These elements are the objective criteria that can effect your ability to view and/or apply for certain jobs, so be sure to update them at least once every semester…keeping that info current is VERY important.

Once you update your profile, we encourage you to explore all the other things you can do with CareerLinX.  If you have any questions or get stuck at any point, don’t hesitate to contact Curt Rogers in Career Services:  crogers@cbu.edu.

image5 things anyone can learn about leadership from Uber’s new CEO
From Business Insider

New Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has a big job at hand: Rehabilitate the ride-hailing company’s battered image and keep ridership growing at a rate that will support its $68 billion valuation. Here’s how Khosrowshahi, who left his job as CEO of Expedia in August to take over Uber, maximizes his effectiveness.

1. Avoid distractions. “When I was in my 20s, I learned not only how to work hard, but about the importance of focus,” Khosrowshahi reflected in an interview with Entrepreneur. “Early on, I learned the importance of being acutely focused on my goals — and the importance of fostering a culture that avoids unnecessary restrictions.”  Read More…

questions2-300x242[1]34 Words & Phrases That Scream “I’m a Leader” on Resumes
From The Muse

One of the most common types of people I work with are those aiming to elevate their brand messaging to more loudly announce, “I’m one hell of a leader!” as they change jobs. It’s one thing to be good at tasks, projects, and areas of specialization, but if you’re aspiring to manage teams, you simply can’t stop there. You also have to position yourself as an inspiring, effective leader.

There are hundreds of words and phrases that’ll help give those who review your resume or speak to you in an interview an immediate hint that you’ve got leadership firepower. Here are a few of my favorites: Read More…

icon_interview3How To Be A Hardworking Employee Without Sacrificing Your Personal Life
From Forbes

Let’s be real for a second. These days, many of us live in a world of excess, where more is definitely better. We heap our plates full with seconds when we’re already full, overstuff a drawer with t-shirts we’ll never wear again and ensure that we own at least 20 mugs. (I know, I know — each of those mugs serves a very specific purpose.)

Often, we apply this “more is more” principle to our professional lives, too. Clocking in at the crack of dawn and logging off only when our eyelids can’t stay open anymore are often heralded as hallmarks of star employees.   Read More…

hotjobsCBU has launched a pilot Campus Intern Program in a handful of departments across campus, including Career Services.  Other participating departments include Human Resources, the Plough Library, the Psychology Lab, the Art Studio, and Graduate Engineering.

Unlike our regular campus work-study program, these positions will require students to apply for, and interview for, each position that interests them.  These students “interns” will have greater responsibilities within each department, and will work approximately 10 hours per week.  Each position pays $9.25/hour.
