CBU CareerLinX Recruitment System Q&A

CareerLinx_shortI see “CareerLinX” mentioned in this newsletter all the time.  What IS that exactly?

CareerLinX is the recruitment system software used by CBU Career Services.  This system allows CBU students and alumni to view jobs, internships, and other opportunities posted by local and national employers, as well as on-campus intern and work-study positions!  Most jobs are posted by employers who we’ve worked with for years, and who are specifically looking for a CBU student or alumnus to fit the bill!

There are lots of other things you can do with CareerLinX, too (load resumes and cover letters, RSVP to workshops, etc.), but the main goal is to help you more easily interface with recruiters who are looking for someone just like you!

Do I already have an account?

If you were enrolled at the beginning of the year, then yes, you should already have an account under your CBU email address!  All current students automatically get an account as in-coming freshmen…and it lasts in perpetuity!   So if you missed the “System Welcome” message that was sent with your username and password, your account is still waiting for you!

If you’re an alumnus, or a new student who still needs an account, then you can sign up for an account at any time.  You can set your username and password to whatever you prefer.

How do I log in to CareerLinX?

Easy!  Just click here.  If you’ve not used your account before now, then your default username is your CBU email address.  Just keep in mind that your default password is NOT the same as your CBU email password.  CareerLinX is a stand-alone system (not part of your email, or Banner, or MyCBU), so the initial password is different from any others you may use.  If you already have an account, just use the “forgot password” link to reset it.  You can then change it to whatever you want!

What is the first thing I should do when I’m logged in?

As mentioned above, there are a lot of things you can do with CareerLinX.  But the first thing you’ll want to do is update your profile in the “profile” tab.  You can share as much or as little information as you want, but there are a few very important things to keep current…such as your major, your class year, and your anticipated graduation date.  These elements are the objective criteria that can effect your ability to view and/or apply for certain jobs, so be sure to update them at least once every semester…keeping that info current is VERY important.

Once you update your profile, we encourage you to explore all the other things you can do with CareerLinX.  If you have any questions or get stuck at any point, don’t hesitate to contact Curt Rogers in Career Services:  crogers@cbu.edu.

icon_badinterview11 things you say that will automatically disqualify you in a job interview
From Business Insider

Nobody’s perfect. You could be pro at job interviews, but there’s always a chance you’ll say something a bit off.

That won’t necessarily sink your candidacy, though. Your qualifications and endearing personality might just carry you over.

That is, unless you say something so bad that you completely wreck your chances.  Here are a few interview faux pas that could automatically disqualify you, unless you’re really lucky:  Read More…

icon_interview3If You Want the Job, Don’t Ask These Questions
From Inc.

You’ve prepped for all the expected questions, practiced discussing your experience and perfected your firm handshake. Don’t blow the job interview by asking a question that puts you at a disadvantage.

As a job seeker, going into an interview with curiosity is a must. After all, an interview is a two-way dialogue to help both you and the hiring manager determine if you are a good fit for each other. Thoughtful questions help gather information to make a good decision while showing the interviewer how you think.

Great queries will demonstrate your enthusiasm, interest and judgment. Poorly chosen ones can reveal a bad attitude, lack of preparation or worse. The questions you ask have the power to position you as a strong candidate with a lot to offer, or as someone whose sole mission is to collect their next paycheck.

Here are seven questions you should never ask in a job interview. Read More…

graphHow To Move From Entrepreneurship Back To Employment — Three Strategies For Telling Your New Story
From Forbes

After several years at a top management consulting firm, my engineer client moved rapidly up the ranks of a start-up from operations to project management to head of business development, until slow growth and slower fundraising made him realize that he not only was not going to have the big exit story to tell at cocktail parties but he needed to find more secure employment. Could he get back to a brand name firm after almost eight years at a start-up?

He absolutely could (and did) and so can you. If you have taken time to pursue your entrepreneurial dreams or try your hand at freelancing and find yourself longing to get back to a regular corporate job,. you need to tell a new story that makes your return to corporate the obvious next step. Here are three strategies (and mistakes to avoid) as your craft your new career story:  Read More…
